Types of Contraception

Contraception is the deliberate act of preventing conception or impregnation while engaging in sexual activities. In other words, contraception or the use of contraceptives comes into play when a lady is sexually active, but does not intend to have children.

There are different types of methods of contraception. They include:

  • Long-acting reversible contraception –  the implant or intra uterine device (IUD)
  • Hormonal contraception – the pill or the Depo Provera injection
  • Barrier methods – condoms
  • Emergency contraception
  • Permanent contraception – vasectomy and tubal ligation.

Does Lime Prevent Pregnancy?

Lime, which is our case study has been used by some ladies as a form of emergency contraceptive. Emergency contraceptives are birth control measures that may be used after sexual intercourse to prevent pregnancy.

Lime and lemon juice was used by women in ancient times hoping to prevent pregnancy. In central Nigeria, it’s common for women to use lime juice douches in an attempt to prevent pregnancy, HIV and other issues.

However, research has not been able to prove that lime is reliable for the prevention of pregnancy. The use of lime for this is not approved by any medical organization and can only be found in very old articles whose reliability or omnibus nature cannot be guaranteed.

The closest researchers have come to the use of lemon or lime as a form of birth control is a series of tests in rats.

The tests revealed a reduction in the fertility of the rat when lime was administered orally.

The reduction in fertility was however unremarkable, meaning that the rats were able to conceive but not as frequently as normally. This research does not support the use of lime as a contraceptive. Much studies of lime on humans to prevent pregnancy have not been done.

It is therefore safer and more advisable that where there is a desire to prevent pregnancy, the individual should see a professional medical personnel and find a birth control method that is most suitable to their health status.

This is important as a lot of individuals have endangered not only their health but their lives over time by the use of untried and unreliable birth control methods.

With this in mind, it is important to remember that the actual best forms of Contraception remain abstinence or the use of medically approved methods such as condoms, injectibles, the pill, authorized emergency contraceptives and the more permanent methods like vasectomy and tubal ligation.

In Conclusion

Contrary to a lot of myths and assumptions going around, lime has been shown to be a very unreliable method of preventing pregnancy.

For health and safety reasons, it is advised that you stick to medically approved methods of contraception. If you’ve been wondering whether lime can prevent pregnancy, I hope you find this helpful.
